Group Guitar Lessons (Beginner) Syllabus
Monday Nights @ 6:30-7:30p

Class #1

  • Introductions

  • Overview of Class

  • Overview of the Guitar Book

  • Parts of the Guitar

  • Strings Names

  • Tuning the Guitar

  • Proper Hand Technique for Chords

  • How to Hold the Pick

  • Basic Strumming

  • Introduction to G Chord and Chord Set 1

 

Homework:  15-30 minutes a day / Review Class #1 Topics / Chord Set 1 / Basic Down Strum Chord Set 1 / Practice “4 Down Strums and Change Chord” exercise.

 

Class #2

  • Tuning the Guitar

  • Review of Class #1

  • Picking Up and Down

  • Down Strumming

  • Play G Chord and Chord Set 1

  • Play “4 Down Strums and Change Chord” Exercise

  • Play “How Great Is Our God” with “Down Strum Let Ring” Strum Pattern and Chord Set 1

 

Homework:  15-30 minutes a day / Review Class #2 Topics / Practice “4 Down Strums and Change Chord” exercise / Practice “How Great is Our God” using “Down Strum Let Ring” strum pattern and Chord Set 1.

 

Class #3

  • Tuning the Guitar

  • Review of Class #1 & 2

  • Play “4 Down Strums and Change Chord” Exercise with Chord Set 1

  • Play “How Great Is Our God” with “4 Down Strums” Strum Pattern

  • Brief Look at “Other Common Chords”

  • Strumming Patterns Introduction

  • Strumming Pattern 1

  • Play “How Great is Our God” using Strumming Pattern 1

 

Homework:  15-30 minutes a day / Review Class #1 & #2 Topics / Practice “How Great is Our God” using Strumming Pattern #1.

 

Class #4

  • Play “How Great is Our God” using Strumming Pattern #1 and Chord Set 1

  • “Other Strumming Patterns”

  • Chord Families Introduction / Give Chords a Number for “How Great is Our God”

  • Introduction to Chord Set 2

 

Homework:  15-30 minutes a day / Review Previous Class Topics / Chord Set 2 / Practice “How Great is Our God” using Chord Set 2 and “Down Strum Let Ring” strumming pattern / Review Chord Numbers.

 

Class #5

  • Review of Chord Set 2

  • Play “How Great is Our God” using Chord Set 2 and “Down Strum Let Ring” Strumming Pattern

  • Introduction to Notes on the Guitar (Low E String)

  • Practice “How Great is Our God” (Chord Set 2) with Strumming Pattern #1 and #2

  • Review Chord Numbers and Chord Families

  • Pick out a song for the next week from the suggested websites, identify its key, and give each chord a number from its Chord Family.  (Suggested Websites:  worshiptogether.com, vinyardsongs.com, ultimate-guitar.com)

 

Homework:  15-30 minutes a day / Review Previous Class Topics / Practice “How Great is Our God” using Chord Set 2 and Strumming Pattern #1 and #2 / Pick out a song from suggested websites, identify key, and give each chord a number (based on its chord family)

 

Class #6

  • Play “How Great is Our God” using Chord Set 2 and Strumming Pattern #1 and #2

  • Review Notes on the Guitar (Low E String)

  • Identify each song brought to class, key and chord numbers

  • Introduce Capo

  • Play “How Great is Our God” in new key using Capo (Key of C)

  • Introduce “Cornerstone”

 

Homework:  15-30 minutes a day / Review Previous Class Topics / Review notes on the guitar (Low E String) / Practice “How Great is Our God” in Key of C - using Chord Set 2 and Strumming Pattern #1 and #2 / Practice “Cornerstone” with strumming pattern #1

 

Class #7

  • Determine Keys of Songs based on Chord Family

  • Play “Cornerstone” using Chord Set 2 and Strumming Pattern #1

  • Talk about “Recital” next week

 

Homework:  15-30 minutes a day / Review Previous Class Topics / Practice “Cornerstone” using Chord Set 2 and Strumming Pattern #1 / Review “How Great is Our God”

 

Class #8 (Recital Night)

  • Review all Beginner Guitar Class

  • Review Use of Capo and Note Names on Neck

  • Q & A

  • RECITAL: Play How Great is Our God using Strumming Pattern #2

  • RECITAL: Play “Cornerstone” using Strumming Pattern #1

  • Talk about Intermediate Class Topics

 

Homework:  Enjoy Playing the Guitar! Learn New Songs! Take your playing to the next level. Consider registering for the intermediate class!  This class learns more complex chords, strumming patterns, bar chords, scales, arpeggios, finger picking, and gives an introduction to soloing and improvising.  Thank you for taking the Beginner Group Guitar class!
